Vancouver Whitecaps FC forward Giles Barnes voted MLS Player of the Week
NEW YORK (Tuesday, October 25, 2016) – Vancouver Whitecaps FC forward/midfielder Giles Barnes was voted Major League Soccer Player of the Week by the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR) for the 34th week of the 2016 MLS season.
In a heated Decision Day matchup, Barnes led Vancouver Whitecaps FC to a 4-1 victory over fierce rivals Portland Timbers at BC Place on Sunday with a two-goal effort. With the win, Vancouver claimed the 2016 Cascadia Cup title and knocked Portland out of the Audi 2016 MLS Cup Playoffs. The brace was Barnes’ first multi-goal performance of the season and first since April 2015, as the 28-year-old finished the season with six goals and three assists split between the Houston Dynamo and Whitecaps FC. The Cascadia Cup victory was Vancouver's third in four seasons as the team closed the year in winning fashion (West #8, 39 points, 10-15-9 record).
The Jamaican international scored his first goal of the match in the 13th minute with a tremendous left-footed strike into the upper right corner to give Vancouver a 1-0 advantage (Watch Goal).
Barnes would complete his brace in the 32nd minute with a fantastic solo effort. The Englishman stripped Portland of the ball outside the area and made his way into the box where he deftly finished to the bottom right corner to give Vancouver a 2-0 lead (Watch Goal).
The MLS Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season by a panel of journalists from NASR. The group consists of members of print, television, radio and online media.
