Toronto FC forward Sebastian Giovinco voted MLS Player of the Week
NEW YORK (Tuesday, August 9, 2016) – Toronto FC forward Sebastian Giovinco was voted Major League Soccer Player of the Week by the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR) for the 22nd week of the 2016 MLS season.
The reigning Landon Donovan MLS MVP scored a hat trick in Saturday’s 4-1 win over the New England Revolution at BMO Field, his second in four games. Giovinco now paces the Golden Boot race with 15 goals this season while ranking second in MLS with 10 assists. Over Toronto's four-game winning streak, all at home, Giovinco has tallied seven goals and three assists, lifting his squad to second place in the Eastern Conference standings (36 points, 10-7-6 record). The hat trick was the fourth in Giovinco's two MLS seasons, already ranking second in league history.
Giovinco put Toronto on the board in the 20th minute with the first of two scintillating goals nominated for AT&T MLS Goal of the Week. A Michael Bradley ball was deflected in Giovinco's direction at the right side of the box and the Italian international responded with a rocketing kick off the outside of his right foot, curling it past defender Kei Kamara and goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth to give Toronto the 1-0 advantage (Watch Goal).
Toronto's all-time leading scorer dazzled with his second goal of the match moments later in the 29th minute. Giovinco collected the ball on the edge of the area and sent a fantastic long-range curling shot over the top of Shuttleworth to give Toronto a 2-0 lead (Watch Goal).
Giovinco completed his hat trick with a penalty kick to give Toronto a 3-0 lead in the 76th minute, sending a right-footed shot past a diving Shuttleworth, whose deflection was not enough to stop Giovinco’s powerful strike (Watch Goal).
Toronto FC next faces Houston Dynamo at BBVA Compass Field on Saturday, August 13 (9 p.m. ET, TSN5/MLS LIVE).
The MLS Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season by a panel of journalists from NASR. The group consists of members of print, television, radio and online media.
