Toronto FC forward Sebastian Giovinco voted MLS Player of the Week
NEW YORK (Tuesday, July 26, 2016) – Toronto FC forward Sebastian Giovinco was voted Major League Soccer Player of the Week by the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR) for the 20th week of the 2016 MLS season.
The 2015 Landon Donovan MLS MVP scored his third career hat trick in MLS play on Saturday in a dominant 4-1 Toronto FC victory over D.C. United at BMO Field. After setting an MLS record 38 combined goals and assists last season, Giovinco now has 11 goals and seven assists this year, once again the highest combined total in the league. Toronto currently sits fifth in the Eastern Conference standings (27 points, 7-7-6), and is now riding a six-game home unbeaten streak.
Giovinco quickly reinserted himself into the Golden Boot race, scoring his first goal of the day on a stunning curling free kick over a wall of defenders to give Toronto a 1-0 lead in the 21st minute (Watch Goal). The goal is one of eight nominated for AT&T MLS Goal of the Week.
The Italian scored his second goal of the match with yet another beautiful free kick, sending the ball upper 90 past diving goalkeeper Travis Worra in the 39th minute to give Toronto a 3-1 lead (Watch Goal). Giovinco completed his hat trick with a goal in stoppage time, sending a Mark Bloom cross into the back of the net with a right-footed volley from close range to secure the 4-1 Toronto victory (Watch Goal).
Toronto next hosts Columbus Crew SC at BMO Field on Sunday, July 31 (7:30 p.m. ET, MLS Live).
The MLS Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season by a panel of journalists from NASR. The group consists of members of print, television, radio and online media.
