Seattle Sounders FC forward Jordan Morris named AT&T Rookie of the Year
Homegrown Player set new MLS American rookie scoring record with 12 goals
NEW YORK (Thursday, Nov. 10, 2016) – Major League Soccer announced today that Seattle Sounders FC and U.S. Men’s National Team forward Jordan Morris has been named the 2016 AT&T Rookie of the Year.
Signed as a Homegrown Player following an accolade-filled collegiate career at Stanford University, Morris recorded one of the most decorated rookie seasons in league history, scoring a Sounders FC leading 12 goals to break a U.S.-born MLS rookie goal record. In addition to the second highest rookie goal total in MLS history, Morris added four assists for Seattle with the club compiling a 10-2-1 record in the regular season in matches where he recorded a goal or an assist. Morris’ contributions helped lead Seattle to the postseason for the eighth consecutive year, where he has continued producing with an assist en route to advancing to the Western Conference Championship.

The 21-year-old showed his knack for coming up big late in matches throughout the season with six game-winning goals, good for second in the league. Morris notched the first goal of his professional career in a 2-1 Seattle victory over the Philadelphia Union on April 16 at CenturyLink Field, also the first game-winner. That match kicked off a stretch of four consecutive games with a goal scored, tying an MLS rookie record. Morris would then add his first multi-goal performance with a brace in Seattle’s 4-2 victory over the LA Galaxy on Sept. 25 at StubHub Center, highlighting a remarkable season that also saw him featured in the Chipotle MLS Homegrown Game vs. Mexico’s Under-20 team.
Overall, Morris has proved extremely robust, appearing in all 34 regular season matches while playing 2,856 minutes, second best among all forwards in the league. Outside of MLS, Morris has become a rising star for the U.S. Men’s National Team, most recently called up for a pair of pivotal 2018 World Cup Qualifying matches against Mexico and Costa Rica. In total, Morris has 12 caps for the U.S., including a memorable first goal in a 2-0 victory over Mexico in April 2015. The U.S. compiled an undefeated 5-0 record in matches Morris has appeared in this year.
