Seattle Sounders FC forward Clint Dempsey voted MLS Player of the Week
NEW YORK (Tuesday, August 23, 2016) – Seattle Sounders FC forward Clint Dempsey was voted Major League Soccer Player of the Week by the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR) for the 24th week of the 2016 MLS season.
In front of 53,302 fans at CenturyLink Field on Sunday, Dempsey scored a brace to lead Seattle to a pivotal 3-1 victory over Cascadia Cup rivals Portland Timbers. Dempsey is now tied for the team lead with eight goals this season after missing time this summer with a standout performance in Copa America Centenario, where he led the U.S. to a semifinals appearance and finished third in combined goals and assists. The second leading scorer in U.S. Men's National Team history, Dempsey has helped Sounders FC climb within striking distance of the final playoff spot in the Western Conference in what would be a momentous late season run (West #8, 30 points, 9-12-3 record).
After a back and forth scoreless first half, Dempsey opened the scoring with a penalty kick goal in the 61st minute. Sounders FC midfielder Cristian Roldan drew the foul in the box, setting up Dempsey's right-footed strike past diving goalkeeper Jake Gleeson to give Seattle the 1-0 advantage (Watch Goal).
Dempsey completed his second multi-goal game in the past three weeks with what proved to be the game-winner in the 80th minute, receiving a pass from Roldan and firing a left-footed strike from just outside the box far post (Watch Goal). Dempsey now has 34 regular season goals in his Sounders FC career, good for third overall in franchise history.
Seattle next travels to BBVA Compass Stadium to take on Houston Dynamo on Wednesday, August 24 (9 p.m. ET) before a Heineken Rivalry Week rematch against Portland Timbers at Providence Park on Sunday, August 28 (5 p.m. ET, ESPN/ESPN Deportes).
The MLS Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season by a panel of journalists from NASR. The group consists of members of print, television, radio and online media.
