Portland Timbers Midfielder Diego Valeri Voted MLS Player of the Week
NEW YORK (Tuesday, March 7, 2016) – Portland Timbers midfielder Diego Valeri was voted Major League Soccer Player of the Week by the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR) for the first week of the 2017 MLS season.
In Portland’s season-opening 5-1 victory over Minnesota United FC, Valeri totaled two goals and an assist, helping to match the team’s highest single-game scoring total in MLS and largest margin of victory at Providence Park in the club’s MLS era. Valeri, who leads the league in combined goals and assists with three after the first week of play, finished the 2016 season tied for eighth in MLS with 21 combined goals and assists (14 goals, 7 assists).
Portland scored the first goal of the 2017 season off a well-placed Valeri corner kick, eventually leading to a Lawrence Olum goal in the 14th minute for a 1-0 advantage (Watch Assist). Valeri would then score his first goal of the season in the opening minutes of the second half with a perfectly placed header off a Sebastian Blanco cross. The Argentine’s header found the top left corner of goal, doubling Portland’s lead in the 47th minute (Watch Goal).
Valeri completed his day by blasting home a penalty kick to the left corner of the net, extending Portland’s lead to 3-1 in the 82nd minute (Watch Goal). The brace was Valeri’s fifth in his Timbers career.
The Portland Timbers return to action this Sunday on the road against the LA Galaxy in the team’s first away game of the season (7 p.m. ET., FS1/FOX Deportes).
The MLS Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season by a panel of journalists from NASR. The group consists of members of print, television, radio and online media.
