Philadelphia Union midfielder Roland Alberg voted MLS Player of the Week

NEW YORK (Tuesday, June 28, 2016) – Philadelphia Union midfielder Roland Alberg was voted Major League Soccer Player of the Week by the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR) for the 16th week of the 2016 MLS season.

After opening his MLS goal campaign the week before, Alberg continued his scoring streak in Week 16, notching four goals in Philadelphia’s two games. Alberg now has five goals in MLS play this season, all coming in the previous three matches, a count that rises to seven goals in the last four matches when including U.S. Open Cup play. The former Dutch Eredivisie player has the highest goals per 90 minutes mark in the league among players with five goals or more, and has helped Philadelphia stay atop the Eastern Conference standings (26 points, 7-5-5 record).

Alberg began the week with the second hat-trick in Union history in a wild 4-3 Philadelphia victory over Chicago Fire on June 22. After an attempt was deflected off the post, Alberg found the ball in the box and rocketed home a shot for his first goal of the match in the 15th minute for a 2-1 Union advantage (Watch Goal). Alberg once again found the ball off deflection for his second goal of the game, this time sending a blocked shot towards goal then collecting the rebound and firing near post in first half stoppage time (Watch Goal). In what proved to be the game winner, Alberg completed his first career hat-trick with a penalty kick goal in the 56th minute for a 4-1 Philadelphia lead (Watch Goal).

The hot streak continued for the 25-year-old in Saturday’s 3-2 defeat to Vancouver Whitecaps FC with the Dutch attacking midfielder giving Philadelphia a 1-0 lead in the 14th minute. Alberg yet again found himself open in the box after recovering a shot off the woodwork and slotting it far post (Watch Goal). Alberg has now scored in four consecutive matches across all competition.

The Union return to MLS play on Saturday, July 2 when it takes on the Houston Dynamo at BBVA Compass Stadium (9 p.m. ET, MLS Live).

The MLS Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season by a panel of journalists from NASR. The group consists of members of print, television, radio and online media.
