LA Galaxy Midfielder David Beckham Named
2011 MLS Comeback Player of the Year

NEW YORK(Monday, Nov. 14, 2011) - Major League Soccer today announced LA Galaxy midfielder David Beckham as the MLS Comeback Player of the Year.

Recovery from a torn Achilles tendon limited David Beckham to just seven MLS games in 2010. Beckham, who turned 36 in May, went six months between competitive games while rehabilitating from the notoriously challenging injury, which can take eight months or more to overcome. The injury ruined Beckham’s chances of playing in the 2010 FIFA World Cup. After his return to the field last Sept. 12 against the Columbus Crew, he still had to regain his fitness and form.

"I've never been out of the game for such a long time," Beckham said at the time. "It's been a quick recovery and I'm happy with that. I thought I was ready for 90 minutes four months ago but after 10 minutes on the field, I felt like I was dying."

This year Beckham has been creative force for the MLS Cup finalist Galaxy, which finished the regular season with the second-highest point total (67) in League history while winning their second consecutive Supporters Shield. Beckham tallied 15 assists (second in MLS) in 26 games, scored twice, and earned his second career All-Star selection. During the regular season, LA went 10-1-3 when Beckham’s name appeared on the score sheet.

In 2011, Beckham surpassed his personal MLS-bests in games played (previous high was 25 in 2008) and assists (10 in 2008).

In addition to winning Comeback Player of the Year, Beckham was named to the MLS Best XI this season.

MLS club representatives, media, and players voted on the award. D.C. United forward Charlie Davies and Chicago Fire forward Dominic Oduro were the other finalists for the award. A breakdown of voting percentages for the top five candidates is below.
