Houston Dynamo Midfielder Andrew Wenger Voted MLS Player of the Week

NEW YORK (March 15, 2016) – Houston Dynamo midfielder Andrew Wenger was voted Major League Soccer Player of the Week by the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR) for the second week of the 2016 MLS season.

In one of the most prolific matches in Texas Derby history, Wenger scored a goal and recorded two assists as the Houston Dynamo defeated FC Dallas 5-0 at BBVA Compass Stadium last Saturday, snapping a seven-game losing skid to their rival in the process. The No. 1 overall pick in the 2012 MLS SuperDraft, Wenger was acquired via trade from the Philadelphia Union in the offseason and has already paid huge dividends with two goals and two assists on the season for a Dynamo squad that leads the league in goals scored.

Houston scored early and often as Wenger helped put the Dynamo on the board, sending a beautiful cross directly in front of goal and connecting with David Horst for a spiking header past the goalkeeper in the sixth minute of action (Watch Assist). Wenger registered his second assist of the match in the 23rd minute, this time sending a dribbling cross to the top of the box for Ricardo Clark who drilled a shot into the bottom right corner, giving Houston a 3-0 lead (Watch Assist).

Minutes later, Wenger capped his tremendous effort with a goal of his own, sending a deflected ball off two battling FC Dallas defenders into the back of the net to give Houston a 4-0 lead in the 27th minute (Watch Goal).

The Houston Dynamo return to action this Saturday on the road against the New York Red Bulls in the team’s first away game of the season (7 p.m. ET., MLS LIVE).

The MLS Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season by a panel of journalists from NASR. The group consists of members of print, television, radio and online media.
