Columbus Crew’s Emilio Renteria Voted MLS Player of the Week

NEW YORK(Tuesday, May 29, 2012) Columbus Crew forward Emilio Renteria was voted Major League Soccer Player of the Week by the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR) for Week 12 of the 2012 MLS season.  Renteria earned the honor for his two goals in two games this week to help the Crew earn two wins: a 2-0 victory over Seattle Sounders FC on Wednesday and a 2-1 win against Chicago on Saturday.

After providing an assist on Justin Meram’s 15th minute game-winning goal, Renteria scored in the 76th minute against Seattle when he chipped a ball over goalkeeper Bryan Meredith from 30-yards out to double the Crew’s lead late in the game.

Renteria notched his second of the week late in the first half on Saturday against the Fire.  After receiving a pass at the top of the six-yard box, he turned and buried a shot in the far corner for the game-winner.

This week’s honor is Renteria’s second career Player of the Week award, previously winning in week nine of the 2010 season.

The 27-year old received nine of the 19 votes with Real Salt Lake’s Alvaro Saborio finishing second with four votes.

The MLS Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season by a panel of journalists from NASR. The group consists of members of print, television, radio and online media. More information and membership information can be found at http://www.soccerreporters.com/.
