Columbus Crew Forward Jairo Arrieta Voted MLS Player of the Week
NEW YORK (Monday, July 30, 2012) Columbus Crew forward Jairo Arrieta was voted Major League Soccer Player of the Week by the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR) for Week 21 of the 2012 MLS season.
Arrieta recorded a brace— the first goals of the Costa Rican’s MLS career — as the Crew held off Sporting Kansas City 2-1 on Saturday.
After the Crew conceeded an early goal, Arrieta leveled the game in the 17th minute, latching onto a pass from Josh Williams and blasting a shot past Jimmy Nielsen from 12 yards. He scored what would eventually prove to be the game-winner in the 34th minute. Arrieta intercepted a misplaced pass from Graham Zusi and drove a shot into the left corner of the net from distance.
The award is the first of Arrieta’s MLS career. He is the second Columbus player to be voted MLS Player of the Week this season, after Emilio Renteria garnered the award in Week 12.
The MLS Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season by a panel of journalists from NASR. The group consists of members of print, television, radio and online media. More information and membership information can be found athttp://www.soccerreporters.com/.
